Redpanda vs Apache Kafka

Redpanda is a Kafka-compatible streaming platform written in C++; Apache Kafka is the Apache Software Foundation project that defined the protocol. This page compares them on what can be checked in public documentation: the licence, the documented Kafka API gaps, what each vendor publishes about price, and who supports each in production. Facts were read from the vendors' own pages and from kafka.apache.org on 26 October 2026. Performance is left to your own tests, for a reason given below.

Short answer

Apache Kafka is Apache 2.0 licensed with no fee. Redpanda's Community Edition is source-available under the Business Source License, its enterprise features need a paid licence, and it publishes no numeric prices, so "Redpanda is cheaper" is a claim until you hold a quote. Redpanda speaks the Kafka protocol with a short list of documented gaps. Both can be supported 24/7 by an independent provider.

Kafka list prices for the managed services are on the Kafka pricing comparison. AceMQ supports Apache Kafka and Redpanda.

Is Redpanda open source? The licence in plain terms

Apache Kafka is Apache License 2.0: use it, modify it, run it as a service. Redpanda splits in two. The Community Edition is under the Business Source License 1.1, which makes the source available and allows production use, but not offering Redpanda to third parties as a commercial streaming or queuing service. Redpanda's licence file says the change date is four years from release, after which that version moves to Apache 2.0. That makes it source-available rather than open source in the Apache sense for the first four years of each release.

The Enterprise Edition is under the Redpanda Community License and needs a licence key. Per Redpanda's documentation, the enterprise features include Tiered Storage, Role-Based Access Control, Audit Logging, Kerberos and OIDC authentication, FIPS compliance, continuous data balancing, Remote Read Replicas, Iceberg Topics and Whole Cluster Restore. New clusters get a 30-day trial licence. When a licence expires the cluster keeps running without data loss, but inactive enterprise features are disabled and active ones enter a restricted state. If you need any of those features in production, plan for the licence, not just the download.

Kafka API compatibility: what is documented as different

Redpanda's documentation says Apache Kafka clients for protocol version 0.11 or later work with it, and that it validates the Apache Kafka Java client and a set of widely used non-Java clients. It also lists gaps, which are the useful part for a migration plan:

  • SCRAM: one mechanism per user, either SCRAM-SHA-256 or SCRAM-SHA-512, not both.
  • HTTP Proxy: no topic or ACL create, update or delete through the proxy.
  • Quotas: the Kafka request-rate quota (request_percentage) is not supported; byte-rate and topic-mutation quotas are.
  • Transactions: the server-side part of KIP-890 is not implemented, and Kafka 4.x clients fall back to the original transaction protocol.

None of these will matter to most applications, and any of them can break one that depends on it. The list is documented, which means it can be tested before cutover. Client libraries based on librdkafka carry extra limitations noted in the same documentation. Source: Redpanda Kafka compatibility, read 26 October 2026.

Use cases, throughput and deployment: Redpanda vs Kafka

Both projects are event streaming platforms, the kind of data streaming infrastructure used for real-time data. Kafka's introduction lists real-time payments, fleet and shipment tracking and IoT sensor data as use cases, and calls the platform a foundation for data platforms, event-driven architectures and microservices. Kafka Connect imports and exports data between Kafka and other systems such as relational databases, and Kafka Streams is the client library for stream processing applications. Redpanda's documentation says it is compatible with the Kafka API, so it works with the tools and integrations built on Kafka. Sources: Kafka introduction and Redpanda introduction, read 26 October 2026.

Throughput and latency are where the vendors' claims start. Kafka's introduction cites a high-performance TCP network protocol. Redpanda's documentation says that, built on C++, it delivers greater throughput and up to 10x lower p99 latencies than other platforms, but the page gives no hardware, workload or Kafka version, so read it as a claim. Measure throughput and latency with your own message size, partition count and replication factor before it drives a decision.

Deployment is the clearer difference. You can run Apache Kafka on your own infrastructure or buy it as a managed service such as Confluent Cloud, with list prices on the Kafka pricing page. Redpanda runs self-hosted on bare metal, containers or virtual machines, or as Redpanda Cloud in three forms: Serverless (multi-tenant, 99.9% SLA), Dedicated (single-tenant on Redpanda's cloud, 99.99% SLA) and Bring Your Own Cloud, where the data plane runs in a dedicated VPC or VNet in your own cloud account while Redpanda manages provisioning, monitoring and upgrades. Source: Redpanda Cloud overview, read 26 October 2026. Whichever you choose, someone still owns the Kafka cluster or the Redpanda cluster: consumer lag, partition design and the on-call rota. That ownership, not the licence line, is most of the total cost of ownership.

Redpanda pricing vs Kafka cost

Redpanda does not publish numeric rates. Its billing documentation lists what is metered (uptime, GB in, GB out, partitions and storage on Serverless; compute units on BYOC, where one unit is 2 vCPU and 8 GB of memory) and sends you to a price estimator or sales. BYOC needs an annual commitment. Redpanda's comparison page claims "10x lower average latencies" and up to 6x lower cloud bills than Kafka, but gives no hardware, workload, replication factor or Kafka version for those figures, so this page does not repeat them as results.

So the cost comparison has one known side. Apache Kafka has no licence fee, and the managed Kafka list prices, with worked monthly costs at 5, 50 and 250 MB/s, are on the Kafka pricing page. To compare Redpanda, send Redpanda the same workload (write rate, consumer groups, retention, partitions, cloud and region) and price Kafka with the same inputs. Include the Enterprise licence if you need tiered storage or RBAC, and include the support contract on both sides.

Support options for each

Apache Kafka has no vendor behind it. Support comes from a managed service provider, a distribution vendor or an independent support company. Redpanda Data supports Redpanda Cloud and self-managed Enterprise customers; the Community Edition has community help only. AceMQ is an independent provider for both: a 15-minute first response on a production emergency, 24/7, for Apache Kafka and for self-managed Redpanda, including versions past vendor end of support. The details of each Redpanda option are in which companies offer Redpanda support.

Choosing between the two is rarely a benchmark question. Check four things: whether you need an enterprise feature that is licence-gated, whether your applications use anything on the compatibility gap list, whether your platform team is happier with a single binary or with the Kafka ecosystem it already runs, and who you call at 3am. A Kafka estate can move to Redpanda by mirroring topics and consumer group offsets with MirrorMaker 2 and testing the clients first. A Redpanda estate can move back the same way.

How we compared

We compared Apache Kafka and Redpanda on nine criteria: what each is, licence, what the licence restricts, cluster metadata, current releases, Kafka API, tiered storage, published price and 24/7 vendor support. Everything checkable comes from kafka.apache.org and redpanda.com and its documentation, checked on 26 October 2026, and vendor claims are marked as claims rather than stated as fact. Where Redpanda publishes no numeric rate, the table says so instead of estimating one. Licences and API coverage change by release, so check the version you plan to run.

Frequently asked questions

Is Redpanda cheaper than Kafka?

Redpanda does not publish numeric prices, so the claim cannot be checked from public sources. Apache Kafka has no licence fee, but running it costs infrastructure and engineers, or a managed service bill. Redpanda's own materials claim up to 6x lower cloud costs without stating a workload. Price both with the same write rate, consumer groups, retention and support level before deciding.

Is Redpanda open source?

Not in the Apache sense. Redpanda's Community Edition is under the Business Source License 1.1, which is source-available: production use is allowed, offering Redpanda as a commercial streaming or queuing service to third parties is not, and each version converts to Apache 2.0 four years after release. Enterprise features need a licence key under the Redpanda Community License.

Is Redpanda faster than Kafka?

Redpanda claims lower latency and higher cost efficiency, but the comparison page we read gives no hardware, workload or configuration behind its figures. Performance depends on your message size, partitions, replication and clients, so test both on your own workload.

Can Kafka clients connect to Redpanda?

Yes for most. Redpanda documents compatibility with Kafka clients for protocol 0.11 or later, with listed gaps: one SCRAM mechanism per SASL user, no topic or ACL management through the HTTP Proxy, no request-rate quota, and no server-side KIP-890. Test your clients against those before cutover.

Who supports Redpanda 24/7?

Redpanda Data supports Redpanda Cloud and self-managed Enterprise customers. The Community Edition has community support only. AceMQ offers independent 24/7 support for self-managed Redpanda with a 15-minute first response on a production emergency.

What is replacing Kafka?

Nothing has replaced Apache Kafka as the reference implementation. Apache Kafka 4.4.0 was released on 22 October 2026, and Kafka 4.0 removed ZooKeeper in favour of KRaft. Redpanda is an alternative to Kafka that speaks the Kafka protocol, so existing Kafka clients can connect to it, within the documented compatibility gaps. Moving between them is a mirroring and testing exercise, not a rewrite.

When should you choose Redpanda instead of Kafka?

When you need a single-binary platform with a vendor behind it, and the licence-gated enterprise features, the 12-month support lines and the documented compatibility gaps are acceptable for your use case. Stay on Apache Kafka when you want a permissive Apache 2.0 licence, the wider Kafka ecosystem and a choice of independent support. Check four things: licence-gated features, the compatibility gap list, platform team preference and who you call at 3am.
