Account and Workspace Design
Account console structure, which workspaces you need, how they map to environments or domains, and naming.
Databricks Implementation
Databricks implementation is the build of a new Databricks environment: account and workspace setup, private networking, identity, a Unity Catalog governance model, CI/CD and the security controls around them. AceMQ designs and builds it from reusable patterns for workspace setup and security pipelines, so the platform your data teams inherit is governed from the first table.
Is This You?
You have bought Databricks and nobody has designed the account, networking and governance model
Workspaces were created ad hoc by different teams and each has its own rules
Unity Catalog is partly adopted, so permissions live in two places and agree in neither
A security review wants private connectivity, SSO and an audit trail before production data goes in
Production notebooks are edited by hand and nothing is deployed from version control
Leadership wants GenAI on corporate data, and the data is neither curated nor governed
Teams were told to "just get started" and are now running into cost and access problems
Outcomes
Concrete state changes, not deliverable counts. This is what actually differs about your Databricks estate when the engagement closes.
Before
Workspaces, networks and identities were created one at a time, each with its own rules.
An account and workspace design written down and built once: environments, networking, identity and naming.
Before
Access is granted to individuals, table by table.
A Unity Catalog model designed first: catalogs, schemas, groups, ownership and grants, with identities provisioned from your identity provider.
Before
Production changes are manual edits.
Jobs and pipelines defined as code in Declarative Automation Bundles and deployed through your CI/CD.
Before
A security review blocks go-live.
A documented control set covering private connectivity, identity, access and audit, with evidence your reviewers can read.
Scope
Account console structure, which workspaces you need, how they map to environments or domains, and naming.
Private connectivity for classic compute and inbound access, network design and egress rules agreed with your network team.
Single sign-on, and users and groups provisioned at the account level from your identity provider, not typed in by hand.
Metastore assignment, catalogs and schemas, storage credentials and external locations, set up once and written down.
Ownership, groups, grants, row filters, column masks, classification and lineage, designed with the data owners you name.
Declarative Automation Bundles, formerly Databricks Asset Bundles, so jobs, pipelines and dashboards are deployed from source control.
Controls that run continuously: policy-enforced compute, secrets handling, audit log monitoring and access reviews.
Structured and unstructured corporate data ingested into curated, owned and governed tables and volumes that natural-language tools can safely read.
The Engagement
Every phase has a defined duration and a concrete artifact handed over at the end of it. You always know what stage you're in and what you've received.
The entry point. We capture your cloud, security and data requirements and design the account, workspaces, network, identity and Unity Catalog model, with a written quote before any build begins.
You receive
Accounts, workspaces, networking and identity built from reusable patterns, in your cloud accounts and with your approvals.
You receive
Catalogs, schemas, grants and policies applied, compute guardrails set, audit and monitoring switched on, and the first pipelines deployed as code.
You receive
Runbooks, a decisions log and working sessions leave the environment understandable by the people who will own it.
You receive
A Databricks implementation turns an empty account into an environment your security team can approve and your data teams can use. The table maps each area to the Databricks mechanism behind it.
| Area | What we set up | Databricks mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| Account and workspaces | Account structure, a workspace per environment or domain, metastore assignment | Unity Catalog allows one metastore per region, shared by every workspace in that region. Workspaces created after 8 November 2023 get one automatically. |
| Networking | Private connectivity for classic compute and inbound access | Private Link. On AWS this needs the Enterprise tier and a customer-managed VPC for classic compute plane connectivity. |
| Identity | SSO and provisioning of users and groups | Automatic identity management or SCIM at the account level. Databricks recommends avoiding workspace-level SCIM on Unity Catalog workspaces. |
| Governance | Catalogs, schemas, groups, ownership and grants | Unity Catalog. Data isolation normally starts at the catalog. Ownership goes to groups, and production jobs run as service principals. |
| Deployment | Jobs, pipelines and dashboards as code | Declarative Automation Bundles, formerly Databricks Asset Bundles. |
| Compute guardrails | Policies, budgets and tags | Compute policies, budgets and custom tags that flow into usage data. |
In greenfield builds, the decisions that take longest to unwind are catalog boundaries, storage layout and identity. Compute can be changed in an afternoon. A catalog model that mirrors last year's org chart cannot, which is why design comes before the first workspace is created.
Unity Catalog is enabled automatically for workspaces created after 8 November 2023. Older workspaces need an upgrade, and any workspace with tables in the Hive metastore needs a plan for them. Databricks documents several routes, and the right one depends on table type and how long the two catalogs must coexist.
| Method | What it does | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| UCX | Assesses workspace readiness and migrates identities, permissions, storage locations and tables. Creates managed or external tables. | A whole-workspace upgrade with large Hive metastore content. UCX is a Databricks Labs project that Databricks does not support directly. |
| Upgrade wizard | Bulk-copies schemas and tables as external tables, using SYNC, and can be scheduled. | A visual route for external tables during a hybrid period. |
| SYNC command | Copies external tables, and managed tables stored outside workspace storage, to external Unity Catalog tables. | A SQL-driven route that can run on a schedule to pick up changes. |
| CREATE TABLE CLONE | Upgrades managed Delta tables to Unity Catalog managed tables. | Managed tables in workspace storage, which SYNC cannot copy. |
| Hive metastore federation | Mirrors the Hive metastore as a catalog in Unity Catalog. | Governing Hive tables in place while a longer migration runs. |
We run UCX where it fits and read its output before acting on it, because an automated assessment still needs a person who knows which tables matter. Grants are rebuilt on groups, not copied user by user.
For a service-level example, see the Unity Catalog migration use case
Databricks security is mostly design decisions made early, then enforced by policy. These are the controls we put in place, and each follows Databricks' own recommendations.
GenAI data readiness is data engineering and governance work. Structured and unstructured corporate data is ingested into curated tables and volumes with owners, descriptions and access rules. Databricks describes Genie answers as grounded in your organization's data and governed through Unity Catalog, so the quality of an answer is bounded by the data underneath it. Readiness is what makes it safe to let business users ask questions of the data in plain English.

FAQ
It is the design and build of a new Databricks environment: account and workspace structure, networking, identity, Unity Catalog governance, CI/CD, security controls and compute guardrails. The aim is a platform that passes security review and is governed from the first table, not retrofitted later.
A workspace design, the network and private connectivity around it, SSO and account-level provisioning, metastore assignment, compute policies and budgets, and deployment from source control, with each decision documented.
Unity Catalog allows one metastore per region, and workspaces created after 8 November 2023 get one automatically. The real work is the model on top: catalogs and schemas that match how your data is owned, groups that match your organization, and grants applied to groups, not individuals.
Yes. Databricks documents several routes for Hive metastore tables: the UCX utilities, the upgrade wizard, the SYNC command, CREATE TABLE CLONE and Hive metastore federation. We choose by table type and by how long the two catalogs must coexist, and rebuild grants on groups.
Through design and policy: private connectivity, SSO with account-level provisioning, group-based grants, service principals for production jobs, row filters and column masks for sensitive data, compute policies, and audit log monitoring. Private Link on AWS requires the Enterprise tier.
Making corporate data fit for natural-language and AI use: structured and unstructured sources ingested into curated tables and volumes, with owners, descriptions and access rules that hold when questions are asked in plain English. It is data engineering and governance work, done before the AI use case is built.
