Apache Superset alternatives in short
On this page

Stay on Apache Superset if your analysts write SQL against a warehouse, you want open-source dashboards that you host yourself, and a team can run its supporting services. Choose Metabase for simple questions from people who do not write SQL, Grafana for operational time-series data, and Power BI when the organization already buys Microsoft licences. AceMQ supports self-hosted Superset (Apache Superset support, upgrades and managed operations), so we say below what staying costs as well as what leaving does. Facts were checked on 4 November 2026.

What each tool is

Superset is an Apache project that, in its own words, ships with 40+ pre-installed visualization types, a no-code chart builder and a SQL IDE, and connects to any SQL-based database. Metabase is released under the AGPL, with commercial editions under a separate licence; its pricing page lists an Open Source plan with unlimited users plus Starter, Pro and Enterprise plans. Grafana is AGPL-3.0-only and describes itself as a way to query, visualize and alert on metrics wherever they are stored, with Prometheus, Loki, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB and Postgres among its data sources. Power BI is Microsoft's service, sold by licence type: free, Pro, Premium Per User and capacity.

Where each one fits

Superset, Metabase, Grafana and Power BI at a glance
ToolBest whenWatch for
Apache SupersetAnalysts write SQL on a warehouse and you want to host it yourself. You run the metadata database, cache, workers and upgrades.
MetabaseMany non-SQL users ask their own questions.SSO, row and column permissions and multi-tenant embedding are listed on its paid Pro plan, not the free one.
GrafanaThe data is metrics and logs, and alerting matters. It is built around operational data, so business reporting is a poorer fit.
Power BIThe estate is already Microsoft.Sharing depends on licences: free users cannot share, and Pro users share with other Pro users unless content sits in Premium capacity.

Moving between them is a rebuild of dashboards and datasets, not a data migration, so decide on who will use the tool every day. The comparison is about hosting and licensing; chart quality is a matter for your own analysts to test on your data.

What staying on Superset costs

Superset is Apache 2.0 licensed, so there is no licence fee. The cost is operations. The administrator documentation describes an application, a metadata database, an optional caching layer and an optional worker and beat. A PyPI install creates only the application, and the quickstart default of SQLite is not recommended for production. PostgreSQL and MySQL are the tested metadata databases, and the docs say to plan regular backups.

  • The optional parts are not optional for many features. Alerts and reports, async queries and dashboard thumbnails need the worker and a broker, and the cache also spares your warehouse repeat queries.
  • One beat only. The async-queries guide warns that several beat instances schedule jobs more than once, which means duplicate reports.
  • Upgrades are a procedure. The documented steps are to back up the metadata database, test in staging, then run superset db upgrade and superset init off-peak, after reading UPDATING.md for breaking changes. On 4 November 2026 the latest stable release on PyPI was 6.1.0, and 7.0.0 was still a release candidate on GitHub.
  • Access takes configuration. Single sign-on goes through Flask AppBuilder settings such as AUTH_TYPE, OAUTH_PROVIDERS and AUTH_ROLES_MAPPING, and row-level security is a set of filters you maintain.

If your team already runs Redis, Celery and PostgreSQL well, this is routine. If not, it is the real price of free. Preset sells hosted Superset, and AceMQ can run it for you on your infrastructure or ours.

When to move

  • To Metabase when most users never write SQL, and the plan features you need (for example SSO or row and column permissions) fit its paid tier or you can live without them.
  • To Grafana when the questions are about systems, not the business. AceMQ covers that stack on the Grafana consulting and support page.
  • To Power BI when Microsoft licensing is already paid for and report authors live in that ecosystem. Check the licence each viewer needs before you count the saving.
  • Stay on Superset when SQL users are the core audience, you need to keep data and sign-in inside your network, or nobody wants another per-user bill.

Four steps to decide

  1. Count the audience. How many people build content, and how many only view it?
  2. Name the data. Warehouse tables, application databases, or metrics and logs.
  3. List the must-haves. SSO, row-level rules, embedding and alerts, and which plan or setting provides each.
  4. Price the operating work. A free licence still needs someone on call for the metadata database and workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Metabase better than Superset?

Neither is better in general. Metabase suits people who ask questions without writing SQL, and Superset suits analysts who work in SQL and want 40+ chart types. Check which plan provides SSO and row-level permissions in Metabase before you compare.

Is Apache Superset free?

The software is Apache 2.0 licensed and free to use. You pay for the servers, the metadata database, Redis and workers, and the people who run them. Preset sells a hosted service if you would rather not.

Can Grafana replace Superset?

For operational dashboards over metrics and logs, often yes. Grafana describes itself as a tool to query, visualize and alert on metrics, so it is a weaker fit for business reporting built on warehouse tables.

What does it take to run Superset in production?

A production metadata database such as PostgreSQL or MySQL with backups, a cache, Celery workers and exactly one beat for alerts and async queries, and a tested upgrade procedure. A PyPI install gives you only the application.

Does Power BI need a licence for every viewer?

It depends on where the content lives. Microsoft's licence page says free users cannot share content, and Pro users share with other Pro users unless the content is in a Premium capacity workspace, where free users can view it.
