VMware Licensing in 2027: The Dates That Matter
On this page

VMware licensing in 2027 turns on one Broadcom date: 11 October 2027, when general support ends for vSphere 8, ESXi 8, vCenter 8 and vSAN 8, and service ends for NSX 4 and VCF 5.2. A Microsoft deadline lands on 30 August 2027. Broadcom has published no 2027 price list, and no terms for the reported vSphere Standard update.

AceMQ's quote data adds one planning fact. Of the 37 renewals and new subscriptions we quoted between September 2025 and September 2026, ten, one in four, were accounts Broadcom manages through its own account directors, and a partner cannot quote into those. Routing that check can take two to three weeks, so run it well before 11 October 2027. Where the expiration date, core count and entitlement record were in hand, quotes came back inside a business day.

After the listed end-of-service dates Broadcom states there is no technical support and no new patches for those versions, and recommends VCF 9 or VVF 9.

What Ends on 11 October 2027 Besides vSphere 8

Broadcom's end-of-service notice lists more than vSphere. Alongside ESXi 8.x, vCenter 8.x and vSAN 8.x it names NSX 4.x, VCF 5.2.x, HCX 4.x, Aria Automation 8.18.x, Aria Operations 8.18.x, Aria Operations for Logs 8.18.x, Aria Operations for Networks 6.x, Data Services Manager 2.x, VMware Identity Manager 3.3.7 and VMware Live Recovery 9.0.x, all on 11 October 2027. An estate running VCF 5.2 has the same date as one running only vSphere 8, so check each product version in your inventory, not just the hypervisor. VCF licensing explains how the bundle is counted.

What Is Not Changing: Licensing Rules Going Into 2027

  • Subscription only, per physical core. Every core is licensed, with a minimum of 16 cores per processor (Broadcom's Standard program documentation states it for Standard).
  • 72-core minimum order. It applies to every AceMQ quote on top of the per-processor floor. We have seen no Broadcom notice changing either for 2027.
  • vSphere 9 only in VVF and VCF. Standard and Enterprise Plus are supported only up to vSphere 8 Update 3 (Broadcom KB 409233).
  • No published rate card. Broadcom has published no 2027 price list. Third-party forecasts of large increases are forecasts; we found no Broadcom notice setting 2027 prices.

vSphere Standard$50––
vSphere Foundation (VVF)$135$117–196$100–160
Cloud Foundation (VCF)$350~$344$257–348

All figures are per physical core, per year. Broadcom publishes no rate card: list prices are the partner price list as reported by Veeam Community and Rimini Street, checked 20 October 2026. AceMQ quote ranges are from real 2026 quotes; VCF has one 1-year quote. The 16-core minimum per CPU and the 72-core minimum order apply to every row. Confirm vSphere Standard availability for your entity when you ask for a quote. Sources: Veeam Community, vSphere licensing packages and MSRP; Rimini Street, VMware renewal cost estimator.

Working Back From the 2027 Dates

Working back from 11 October 2027: twelve months out is 11 October 2026, so the window for an edition change is open now; nine months out is 11 January 2027, six months out is 11 April 2027 and three months out is 11 July 2027. The same arithmetic applies to the 30 August 2027 Microsoft date and to your own contract expiry.

  • Terms that cross 11 October 2027. A term that runs past that date on vSphere 8 alone spends its last months without general support. VVF and VCF include vSphere 9, so the choice is which bundle, not whether to upgrade.
  • Standard-size estates. Broadcom's reported update is not orderable, so a 2027 renewal cannot include it. The status, line by line, is in vSphere Standard return.
  • Terms. Ask for one-year and three-year terms on the same core count. A three-year VVF term saved 15–18% per core on our 2026 quotes.
  • Inputs. Send the expiration date, core count and an RVTools export in the first email. Start six months out for a straightforward renewal and nine to twelve if the edition changes; 2027 renewal wave and how to get a VMware renewal quote give the schedule.

For a position mapped against these dates, request a VMware renewal quote: AceMQ, a Broadcom partner, replies within 24 business hours. Last checked 22 October 2026; the full change history is in every VMware licensing change since Broadcom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What changes in VMware licensing in 2027?

Broadcom has published no new licensing model for 2027. The dated changes are the end of general support for vSphere 8 on 11 October 2027, end of service for NSX 4, VCF 5.2 and other 8-era products that day, and Microsoft's retirement of license-included Azure VMware Solution on 30 August 2027.

When does vSphere 8 reach end of general support?

11 October 2027, per Broadcom knowledge base article 459135, for ESXi 8.x, vCenter Server 8.x and vSAN 8.x. All three became generally available on 11 October 2022. Broadcom's end-of-service notice lists no technical support and no new patches for these versions after that date.

Will VMware prices go up in 2027?

Broadcom has published no 2027 price list, so no increase is confirmed. Reported list prices today are $50 (Standard), $135 (VVF) and $350 (VCF) per core per year, and AceMQ's 2026 quotes ran $117–196 for VVF and ~$344 for VCF on one-year terms. Ask for a current quote, not a forecast.

Does the 72-core minimum still apply in 2027?

Yes. On AceMQ's 2026 quotes every order is floored at 72 cores, on top of 16 cores per processor, and we have seen no Broadcom notice changing either for 2027. Count cores, not hosts: a two-host estate with 24 to 40 physical cores is billed at 72.

Will the updated vSphere Standard be available in 2027?

Not confirmed. Broadcom executives said in September 2026 that an updated vSphere Standard is coming, but as of 22 October 2026 no price, date or sales channel has been published. Plan against the 11 October 2027 date and treat the update as an option that does not yet exist.

When should I request a 2027 renewal quote?

Six months before the term ends for a straightforward renewal, nine to twelve if the edition changes. For a term ending in the first half of 2027, that is now. Send the expiration date, core count and an RVTools export; AceMQ returns quotes within 24 business hours.
